The sample stage is where a custom plush project either becomes real or quietly falls apart. The first physical sample is the moment your artwork meets fabric, stuffing, and a sewing line — and it’s the moment when small problems are still cheap to fix. This guide walks through how the sample process works at a custom plush factory, what to send, what to expect back, and how revisions and fees actually function.
The Plush Maker is an owned plush factory in Dongguan, manufacturing custom plush since 1998. The numbers and timing below reflect how we run sampling. Other factories may differ.
A custom plush sample is a one-off, hand-built version of your plush, made on the same materials and methods that bulk would use. It’s not a 3D render. It’s not a photograph of a similar product. It’s the physical thing — eyes you can poke, seams you can examine, fur pile you can stroke.
A sample lets you check:
You cannot judge plush from screen mockups. The sample is the contract.
A clean sample brief contains:
If you don’t have all of this, send what you do have and we’ll walk through the gaps.
We charge for samples deliberately. Paid samples sharpen the brief on both sides: the factory builds carefully, and the buyer treats the sample as a real review rather than a freebie. Free samples typically signal hidden cost elsewhere — usually in materials grade.
Each sample ships with:
Courier costs for sample shipping are usually billed at cost. EU/US transit is typically 3–6 business days.
Sample revisions are normal. Real character plush often needs 1–3 revision rounds before the sample is locked.
Common revisions:
Each revision round adds a few days to a week, depending on what changed. A fabric re-source can add longer if the new fabric isn’t on the floor.
What we ask of buyers in revisions:
When the sample is locked, we capture it as the golden sample. The golden sample becomes the visual reference for the production line and for QC inspection. Bulk production cannot match a sample that hasn’t been locked, so don’t half-approve.
After sample approval and deposit, bulk production usually takes 25–45 days, depending on quantity, materials, production method, and current factory capacity. See Custom Plush Toy Cost for how this fits the overall timeline.
Two different milestones, often confused:
For most projects, the PPS is what you sign off on. The shipment sample is typically a check, not a redesign opportunity.
Send your artwork, target quantity, and project details to request a factory-direct quote. The quote will include the sample fee for your specific design and the projected sample lead time.
Q: How much does a custom plush sample cost? A: Usually USD 150–200 per design depending on complexity. The sample fee is refundable for confirmed bulk orders of 3,000 pcs or more.
Q: How long does sampling take? A: Usually 7–14 days after artwork and details are confirmed. Complex multi-accessory designs sit at the longer end.
Q: How many revision rounds are normal? A: 1–3 rounds is typical for character plush. Each round adds a few days to a week depending on what changed.
Q: Can you skip the sample and go straight to bulk? A: Not recommended. Skipping the sample is how brands end up with a 2,000-piece run that doesn’t match their character. The sample fee is always smaller than a re-do.
Q: Can I get samples in multiple sizes? A: Yes, each size is its own sample fee. We sometimes recommend sampling at the smallest size first to lock the design, then sizing up.
Q: Do you ship samples with tracking? A: Yes. Samples ship by international courier with tracking. Courier cost is billed at cost.
